What is Dual Axis Tracking?

Tracker image.png

Xirasol Patented Dual Axis Tracking System operates with 2 separate motions controlled by an algorithm that knows the position of the sun.

North / South Motion - A steel impregnated belt moved by the main motor on the primary axis crescent allows the main beam to pivot around a point at the top of the posts thus tilting the panels from North to South. The main beam can hold up to 14 arrays of 6 Bifacial Solar Panels and is usually 2.2m above the ground allowing for excellent reflected light while allowing the solar panels to face the sun. If the solar panels face more than 15 degrees away from the sun they can result in up to a 50% loss in energy.

East / West Motion - A stainless screw and oil impregnated nut allow for motor 2 to move push rods that move the solar panel arrays from East to West.

Gear boxes and linking shafts allow the 2 motors to control many rows of solar panels and when both motors are moved together you get Dual Axis Tracking.

Pre-manufactured Wiring Looms are run along the mainbeam and allow for quick electrical installation and are pre-tested in the factory.

The system is quick to manufacture and quick to install - A standard Piling rig with enough height can pile the posts and assembly can be performed by a tele handler.

The Tracking System is controlled by a Bechoff PLC with ABB/Sew motor drives and Sew Australian manufactured motors. A Control System and 2 motors can control up to 1 MW of solar panels.

In high winds the solar panels will sit flat allowing for wind to flow through the solar system.

PROS:

2 Motors per MW not a motor per row. Saves on massive cost, installation and maintenance.

Dual-axis tracking allows solar installations to capture the maximum energy by tracking the movement of the sun in all directions. Back tracking at the end of the day allows for maximum output.

Bifacial Solar Panels allow for the capture of reflected light, which is aided by the height of Xirasol’s tracking system. The height of the Dual Axis Solar Tracking system adds the energy gained on the rear side of the Bifacial Solar Panels.

A Bifacial Solar Panel is double sided and transforms sunlight to energy on both sides of the panel.

Dual-axis trackers generate up to 60% more energy than standard roof or fixed mounts (combination of Dual Axis and bifacial Solar Panels). The extended profile allows for between 8 and 12 hours of solar power output. This allows for a greater net reduction in peak power accounts. Sunflower Solar has the ability to analyse your power accounts with meter interval data to accurately verify savings based on the last year of usage.

Premade and tested Wiring looms made at Xirasol's factory can save large amounts of money on on-site electricians, accomodation and travel.

Uses very little energy to run tracking system with small movements every 5 minutes.

Piling is performed by a standard piling rig such as a Vemeer PD10.

Installation is quick and can be performed by a small number of skilled labourers not a large team of expensive labourers that have to be bought to site.

Using Dual Axis Tracking instead of Single Axis Tracking can result in up to 15% additional energy which means 15% more return out of your land, Cables, transformers etc... resulting in a higher ROI.

Xirasol's Dual Axis Tracking can fit in similar if not more panels per acre of land than most single axis tracking systems. (Conventional Dual Axis Tracking on a post requires up to 4.5x the land to allow for shading).

Quick Maintenance allows for reduced issues.

RandD has been completed with independent Engineering Analysis.

Xirasol's Patented Dual Axis Solar Tracking System follows the sun from first light in the morning till the last ray at night, so can really reduce your dependence on power from the grid - Up to 60 % more.

Dual Axis Tracking Versus Single Axis Tracking Versus Fixed Solar Panels

It is easy to see how Output is related to how closely solar panels face the sun and also the height of the tracking system makes for higher reflected energy and greater flexibility in the operation of the movement.
